About Us

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Office of Public Relations and Communications exists to heighten the public’s awareness of the Department’s mission to ensure that all students are prepared for college or the career of their choice upon graduation from high school.

In support of the mission, the Public Relations Office provides publicity for events, activities and the many successes of the Department’s schools, students, teachers, employees and leadership through internal and external communication.

The Office of Public Relations and Communication, through an integrated marketing communications approach services the marketing, branding, public, and media relations, advertising and graphic design needs of the Department, districts, and schools.

The Public Relations Office reports directly to the Commissioner of Education.

ST. CROIX, USVI – The Ricardo Richards Elementary School will dismiss early on Oct. 8, effective immediately, due to a water service interruption impacting the campus.

Parents may begin arriving at the school to pick up their children.

WAPA technicians have been alerted and are working to rectify the issue.

Ricardo Richards is expected to resume normal operations on Tues., Oct. 12.

Public School Updates for October 11-18

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The following are important updates for Virgin Islands Department of Education schools for Oct. 11-18.

• All public schools will be closed Mon., Oct. 11 in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day will also be celebrated on Oct. 11. All schools will reopen on Oct. 12.

• The Claude O. Markoe Elementary School will resume in-person learning on Oct. 12. The campus reverted to virtual learning on Sept. 27 due to COVID-19 exposure. The V.I. Department of Health has conducted a series of COVID-19 testing of students and staff and deemed the school safe to resume in-person learning. The campus has been sanitized using CDC-approved products.

• The annual TEACH “Together Educating America’s CHildren” Conference will be held in the St. Thomas-St. John District on Oct. 15. Schools are closed for St. Thomas-St. John students that day.

State Office of Special Nutrition Programs Announces USDA Commodities Distribution

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The Virgin Islands Department of Education Special Nutrition Programs will host a series of drive-through distributions of USDA commodities territory-wide in October. All eligible persons must report on the date and time designated for their respective island.

To obtain commodities, proper identification must be presented. A self-certification form must be completed on-site, where participants are required to provide information about their gross income. Anyone unable to provide satisfactory information to the distribution site staff will not receive a commodity package. Participants should bring sturdy boxes or bags to assist with the transport of the food packages.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) uses income, not age to determine program eligibility. The distribution is for all needy persons meeting the criteria shown below. Distribution packages will be limited to one per household.

• Sat., Oct. 9, 2021, 7:00 a.m. until supplies last

• LOCATION: Addelita Cancryn Intermediate & Jr. High School (former site of Lockhart Elementary) ST. JOHN

• Sun., Oct. 10, 2021, 10:00 a.m. until supplies last

• LOCATION: Julius E. Sprauve School cafeteria ST. CROIX

• Sat., Oct. 16, 2021, 7:00 a.m. until supplies last

• LOCATION: St. Croix Educational Complex High School Individuals or heads of households eligible to receive the commodities must be identified as needy by meeting one of the following criteria:
                    1. A person or head of household whose gross family income does not exceed 185% of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines for July 1,                               2021, thru June 30, 2022 (see income eligibility guideline table below).
                    2. A person or Head of the household that is a client of any of the following income certified assistance programs:
                                         (a) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
                                        (b) Medical Assistance Program
                                        (c) Be a Tenant of a Subsidized Public Housing program
