About Us

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Office of Public Relations and Communications exists to heighten the public’s awareness of the Department’s mission to ensure that all students are prepared for college or the career of their choice upon graduation from high school.

In support of the mission, the Public Relations Office provides publicity for events, activities and the many successes of the Department’s schools, students, teachers, employees and leadership through internal and external communication.

The Office of Public Relations and Communication, through an integrated marketing communications approach services the marketing, branding, public, and media relations, advertising and graphic design needs of the Department, districts, and schools.

The Public Relations Office reports directly to the Commissioner of Education.

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The Pearl B. Larsen PreK-8 School on St. Croix and the Ulla F. Muller Elementary School on St. Thomas will resume in-person learning on Sept. 13.

The schools reverted to virtual learning on Sept. 9 and 10 due to COVID-19 exposure.

Both campuses have been thoroughly sanitized using CDC-approved products and solutions.

The Department wishes to remind employees who are sick to remain at home. If an employee has undergone COVID-19 testing, he or she should remain quarantined until negative COVID-19 test results are received. If an employee tests positive for COVID-19, he or she should seek further guidance from the V.I. Department of Health or a healthcare provider.

Parents are also informed that if they or anyone in their household test positive for COVID-19 or have COVID-19-releated symptoms, children in that household should not attend in-person classes. All members of the household must remain in quarantine until negative COVID-19 test results are received or until all members have been cleared by the V.I. Department of Health. To knowingly expose others to COVID-19 is punishable by fines and imprisonment.

Education Commissioner Racquel Berry-Benjamin Tests Positive for COVID-19

ST. THOMAS, USVI – Virgin Islands Department of Education Commissioner Racquel BerryBenjamin has tested positive for COVID-19. Berry-Benjamin underwent COVID-19 testing on Sept. 10, after experiencing symptoms overnight on Sept. 9.

Berry-Benjamin did not perform any official duties following an emergency press conference she hosted on Sept. 9.

Assistant Education Commissioner Victor Somme III will serve as Acting Commissioner while Berry-Benjamin recuperates.

Berry-Benjamin has been fully vaccinated since February 2021.

During a telephone call to staff on Friday evening, Berry-Benjamin said employees and the community should continue to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols, as the coronavirus remains prevalent, and all are susceptible to it.

The Department of Education extends best wishes for a speedy recovery to Commissioner BerryBenjamin and thanks to the community for its support.
