Public Invited to Participate in Meeting to ‘Rethink’ Career & Technical Education
ST. THOMAS, USVI -- The Virgin Islands Department of Education, State Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education in collaboration with the Workforce Development Board, invites the public to a virtual meeting in January to present their views and make recommendations for redefining and strengthening Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the Territory.

In July 2018, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (PL 115-224) was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump, which reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Act of 2006, now known as Perkins V. Perkins V gives states flexibility in administering their CTE programs; promotes innovative practices in CTE, and calls for extensive collaboration among state, local-level secondary, postsecondary, business and other partners in the development and implementation of high-quality CTE programs that prepare students/learners for employment in high-skill, high-wage and demand occupations that meet the need of the state and local workforce.
The following topics will be discussed:
- Are the USVI’s current CTE programs effective?
- Are current CTE programs preparing students/learners for employment in the V.I. Department of Labor’s demand, high-wage occupations in the workforce?
- Are current CTE programs preparing students/learners to meet the projected demands of the shifting workforce in alignment with the USVI’s Vision 2040 as follows:
- Services –V.I.-style tourism, professional/technological services
- Technology- coastal ocean resources, health sciences, research and development
- Energy- renewable energy
- Agriculture- agribusiness
- Manufacturing- light manufacturing
