POSITION: STATE SPECIAL EDUCATION NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

DESCRIPTION

This is professional work involving the implementation and operation of the Division’s internal networks, servers, and network security. Supervision for this position is received from the State Director of    Special Education. Work in this class involves major responsibility for configuring, managing and maintaining the division’s internal systems, including its webpage, as well as coordinating and collaborating with the State Office of Technology. Work also involves the ability to develop comprehensive plans (hardware and functional) for the office. Duties may also include setting up and breaking down equipment for professional development activities. This employee must be able to maintain high levels of concentration, patience and flexibility especially in unexpected situations. This employee is given considerable latitude in exercising professional skills and independent judgment in the performance of work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Configures and sets up all new server systems required for the division’s activities;
  • Develop and manage the division’s webpage;
  • Manages firewall and exercises overall responsibility for the division’s IT security;
  • Provides support to all internal users;
  • Forecasts any needed improvements, budgeting for and implementing any changes;
  • Plans and coordinates activities including installation and upgrading of hardware and software;
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Cisco Enterprise Switches/ Router: Series 6500;
  • Knowledge of major networking components, network operating systems, and computer hardware components, practices, and techniques;
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques associated with network technology;
  • Knowledge of the state-of-art data and network technology and the ability to incorporate new concepts into the planning and implementation of the LAN/WAN environment;
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and research problems of a complex nature and make recommendations;
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and specification documents;
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment in carrying out functions of the position;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships, with supervisor, colleagues and vendors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field and three (3) years of progressively strong experience working as a Network Administrator; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information technology or a related field and five (5) years of progressively strong experience working as a Network Administrator.
