DESCRIPTION

Qualified candidates should possess excellent writing and computer skills and database management skills. The candidate must be high organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes, able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgement and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.  Candidates must be qualified for developing and writing grant proposals to Foundations and other grant-making organizations, will persuasively communicate mission and programs of the Virgin Islands Department of Education to potential funders. Grant Writer will assemble and submit grant requests, establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with the Departments contacts, conduct prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines.Direct supervision is received from the Commissioner of Education with the majority of work performed independently.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Generates proposals and supporting documents in response to solicitations;
  • Generates revenues for the Virgin Islands Department of Education Office of Special Funding through timely submission of well-researched, well written and well documented grant/fund raising proposals;
  • Familiarizes themselves with the goals and financial needs of the Department of Education;
  • Investigates potential funding sources. After compiling all the information needed, composes and forward proposals to government, corporate, foundations and other funders;
  • Identifies funding opportunities using appropriate research tools;
  • Engages with program individuals at organizations to solicit invitations submit proposals
  • Maintains records to track proposals;
  • Developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations, persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and programs to potential funders;
  • Assembling and submitting grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and
  • presentations;
  • Establishing and maintaining personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts and program officers;
  • Ensuring prompt acknowledgement of foundation gifts;
  • Maintaining calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines, and reports;

  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; participates in meetings.
  • Ability to write clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.
  • Ability to undertake self-development activities, seek increased responsibilities; takes independent actions; ask for and offers help when needed.
  • Ability to travel overnight when required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three years related experience in grant writing and contract administration.
