DESCRIPTION

Directly reports to the respective school’s Principal for any and all aspects of administrative and instructional leadership as assigned by the School Principal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):

  • Provides instructional leadership within the school;
  • Adheres to and enforces board policy, school guidelines, administrative directives, and the district standards;
  • Enforces guidelines to maintain proper discipline and conduct;
  • Assists in the selection and mentoring of staff;
  • Assists building principals with fire, earthquake, tsunami and shooter on campus drills on a regular basis and is able to implement emergency evacuations and lock downs effectively;
  • Supervises extra-curricular activities; commencement exercises and other special events;
  • Works with supervisors, Department heads and teachers;
  • Supervises the custodial staff and inspection of the premises;
  • Assists in the care and management of the building and grounds, furniture, equipment, apparatus, books and supplies;
  • Notifies the principal when maintenance is needed;
  • Supervises support services as assigned;
  • Prepares class and program schedules;
  • Implements programs regarding pupil welfare such as conferring and counseling with students and, as required, with parents, regarding achievement, growth, discipline, extra-curricular activities and other matters related to student success;
  • Represents  the school principal in community functions;
  • Works as a team member to meet the system-wide needs of the district;
  • Participates in the preparation of the school operational budget;
  • Performs all other related work as assigned by the building principal or District Administrator.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Considerable knowledge of Departmental policy, regulations and procedures;
  • Thorough understanding of administrative decision making process;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the teaching/learning process;
  • Ability to communicate with staff, central office and the public;
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate committee work, in-service training and workshops;
  • Ability to write reports, carry out instructions and develop comprehensive plans with a minimum of supervision;

CERTIFICATION AND SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Administration, Supervision, Curriculum Development and Leadership Development; three years of satisfactory professional experience will be required in the U.S. Virgin Islands Public School System and
  • Current certification as an Assistant Principal from the Virgin Islands Board of Education
