Virgin Islands Department of Education Announces 2024 Regional Science Bowl Competition on Sunday, March 3, 2024, on St. Croix

The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) is delighted to announce the upcoming 2024 Regional Science Bowl Competition, scheduled for Sunday, March 3, 2024, commencing at 9:00 am. The competition will be hosted at the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park, situated on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. We extend a warm invitation to the public and media to join us for this exciting event.

Approximately 100 students are expected to participate in the Regional Bowl competition, an engaging question-and-answer tournament designed to assess their proficiency in various scientific disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science, and general science. Teams comprising middle school and high school students will compete to demonstrate their comprehensive understanding of scientific subjects.

Participating school teams in the Middle School Division include Lockhart K-8 School, Church of God of Holiness Academy, Eulalie Rivera Elementary School, Juanita Gardine Elementary School, and the Pearl B. Larson Elementary School. High School teams include Charlotte Amalie High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean, St. Croix Central, St. Croix Seventh Day Adventist, and St. Croix Educational Complex. The VIDE extends its best wishes to all teams for success in Sunday’s competition.

The Regional Science Bowl, conducted in collaboration with Brookhaven Lab, is part of the National Science Bowl® competition, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, over 325,000 high school students have participated in this dynamic and intellectually stimulating competition. Students engaging in Science Bowl competitions are encouraged to excel in science and mathematics and pursue careers in these fields.

Structured akin to a sporting event, the virtual science bowl competition follows a tournament format, starting with preliminary rounds leading up to elimination rounds. The team with the highest number of correct answers will be honored as the top achievers. All participating students will receive a Science Bowl T-shirt, while the winning teams will be awarded a trophy. The first-place team will earn the remarkable opportunity to participate in the National Science Bowl, scheduled to be held in Washington, DC, from April 25th to 29th, 2024.
