Students Experience the Joys of Giving Back
St. Croix Central High School FBLA Local Chapter 7406 and Eulalie S. Rivera K-8 School seventh graders experienced the joys of giving back this holiday season.
Along with Lead Advisor Julice Joseph, members of the Central High FBLA recently visited the Ricardo Richards Elementary School and delivered gifts to the school's second graders.
"It was such a joy to see the excitement on the faces of those little children," Joseph said.
And just a short distance to the west of Central High, seventh graders enrolled in Mr. Seymour Davis' English class at Eulalie R. Rivera K-8 School were involved in a special give-back project of their own.
After reading a story as part of a classroom assignment that featured a homeless character, the 10 students enrolled in the class spontaneously decided to hold a food collection drive during to give back to an organization in the St. Croix community. Various tasks were assigned to each student and they set out to inform teachers and their peers of the drive.
The students far exceeded their goal of 400 canned goods and non-perishable items, with a total of 604 items collected at the time they made a presentation to Brenda Charles, soup kitchen manager, at Catholic Charities on December 18. Not to mention, donations are still coming in!
Ms. Charles said the students' donations came at the right time because on December 23, her organization will prepare and deliver food platters to 90 residents in need. Additionally, the items will help restock the organization's pantry.
